Improve Internet Speed: Working from Home

The Aptus team knows as well as anyone just how important a reliable internet connection is when working from home. It’s also no secret that more people than ever are trying to get the most from their home internet service. That’s why we’ve put together a few tips on how to get faster internet speed to your devices.

Cable-connect your laptop

Connect your laptop to your router with a cable, not Wi-Fi. This ensures your laptop gets the full speeds available.

If your laptop has a suitable ethernet port, we recommend buying an ethernet cable from your local electronics provider. These are relatively inexpensive and are a great investment to ensure your work is uninterrupted.

Disconnect devices you’re not using

If there’s a TV streaming in the background while no one watches, the internet speeds used by this TV could be the difference needed for your conference call to work without technical issues. It also cuts down on data use, which means there’s more available outside of work hours.

Gaming consoles often run automatic updates. Consider disconnecting the console or change the settings to update between off-peak hours (00:00 – 08:00) so they don’t compete with work.

Move away from interference devices

Some household devices interfere with Wi-Fi signals. Try to move these away from your workplace and router. Some examples of interference devices are:

  • Microwave
  • Fridge
  • Baby monitors
  • Radio

If you’re connecting wirelessly, stay close to the router. Less distance between you and your router gives a stronger signal to your device. Preferably be in the same room.

If all else fails, test the internet speed coming to your laptop. When running speed tests, it’s important to be accurate. See our guide about how to accurately test broadband speed.
