The National Broadband Plan Ireland (NBI) is a government initiative to bring high speed fibre powered broadband to rural Ireland.
Aptus Broadband are currently dedicated to supplying specialist and reliable broadband to rural homes across seven counties in Ireland. However, once the NBI have successfully installed the fibre connections, Aptus will be able to supply high speed fibre broadband to homes across the isle of Ireland.
The primary focus of the NBI is to promote commercial investment in rural areas of Ireland. The NBI will build, operate, and maintain the new high speed fibre network.
The NBI are set to install 1.5 million poles, over 140,000 KM of fibre cable and 15,000 KM of underground duct networks in order to bring 544,000 high speed fibre broadband access to 96% of the Irish land mass.
The majority of these connections will be delivered via the nearest Optical Connection Point, through an overhead line. Some connections may be installed through an existing duct, but this duct must meet NBI specifications.
The NBI is partnered with global technology conglomerates such as Nokia, Granahan McCourt, Secto and many more. This collaboration of telecommunication organisations allows for optimum connectivity and the strategic implementation of rural fibre.
Currently, works have commenced in:
- Co Cork – Carrigaline, Fountainstown, Ballinhassig, Monkstown, and Upper Rochestown
- Co Galway – Oranmore, Clarinbridge, Claregalway, Furbo and Barna. Ballinasloe – areas around Ballinasloe such as Kiltomer, Oatfield, Annagh, Kilconnell, and Ahascragh
- Co Cavan – Ballinagh, Corlurgan, Araghan, Poles, and Caughoo
- Co. Limerick – townlands outside Limerick City including Mungret, Patrickswell, Crecora, Castleconnell and Caherconlish
The NBI plan aim to have the network completed within 5-7 years but are currently ahead of the planned schedule.
